Healing effects of Drum Circles: research
London researchers have shown that Drum Circles can be a surprisingly effective treatment to reduce anxiety and depression.
This study shows the psychological benefits of group drums and also suggests underlying biological effects to support the therapeutic potential for mental health
Said the research team led by Aaron Williamon and Daisy Fancourt from the Center for Performance Science at the Royal College of Music.
The research team examined two groups for ten weeks: an experimental Drum Circle group that received weekly 90-minute drum lessons and a control group with other leisure activities.
No significant improvements were found in the control group. In the drum group, a decrease in depressive symptoms and an increase in social resilience was noted, as well as significant improvements in anxiety disorders and general mental well-being. A shift from a pro-inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory immune profile was also visible.
